Light Commercial

The same design rigour, for a building that isn't a house.

A pub kitchen, a school hall, a library reading room and a village hall all heat very differently to a home, and very differently to each other. We design heat pump systems for small business and organisational premises across the South West: sized properly, built to keep running through the hours that matter to you, and backed by a service team that understands commercial premises can’t afford unplanned downtime.

Why This is Different

A school hall, a pub kitchen and a library don't heat the same way a house does, and they don't fail gracefully either.

Commercial and organisational buildings tend to have heating patterns a domestic system was never designed around: a hall that’s empty most of the day and full for two hours, a kitchen running hot appliances alongside space heating, a building that needs to be warm for the public from a fixed opening time, not whenever it happens to reach temperature. Get the sizing or the controls wrong here and the failure isn’t a slightly cool room, it’s a closed library or a pub that can’t open on time.

We size and design light commercial systems against the building’s actual usage pattern, not a scaled-up version of a domestic calculation, and we back every installation with the same lifetime servicing model we run for residential customers. A heating system a business depends on needs a service relationship it can rely on, not a call-out number that goes to voicemail.

What we design and install

Sized against how the building's actually used.

01

Air source heat pumps

The most common commercial route, sized against the building’s actual heat demand and occupancy pattern.

02

Ground source heat pumps

Where land allows, particularly strong for buildings with consistent, predictable heating demand.

03

Zoned controls

So a building that’s only partly occupied for much of the day isn’t heated as though every room’s in use.

04

Solar PV and battery storage

Reducing what’s drawn from the grid during opening hours.

05

Hot water

Designed around commercial demand patterns, not domestic assumptions.

06

Servicing, diagnostics & repair

Ongoing cover for heat pump and air conditioning systems, whoever installed them originally.

Built Around How The Building Get Used

Three things our commercial installs consider.

Occupancy-led sizing

A school hall used for two hours a day has a completely different heating profile to a library open all day. We design against the real pattern of use, not a generic commercial rule of thumb.

Continuity matters more

A pub, a school, or a library can't simply wait a few days for a repair the way a household sometimes can. Our servicing model is built around minimising downtime for a commercial customer.

One system, one contact

Heating, hot water, solar and controls specified together, installed by our own in-house team, not coordinated between separate contractors.

The Proof

Designed in from the start.

The Investment

Funding for small non-domestic buildings.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme extends to small non-domestic buildings, not just homes, up to a total heat demand of 45kWth (or 300kWth where a shared ground loop is used), which covers most pubs, libraries, village halls and small schools. The same grant amount applies as the domestic scheme.

Larger public buildings that exceed that threshold have separate routes worth exploring, such as the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme for schools and other public sector premises. We can advise on which applies during the survey.

£7,500

Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant — towards an air or ground source heat pump, plus 0% VAT on qualifying work.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Is our building too big or too small to count as "light commercial"?

Broadly, if it’s a single premises, a pub, a school, a library, a village hall, an office, rather than a multi-building industrial site, it’s the right scale for this page. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s own cut-off (45kWth heat demand) is a reasonable rule of thumb, and we’ll confirm properly at survey stage either way.

Yes, and it should be designed specifically around that pattern rather than heated as though occupied all day. Zoned controls and proper sizing against actual usage hours are central to getting a commercial installation right.

Our service team covers diagnostics and repair for heat pump and air conditioning systems, including ones we didn’t originally install. For a commercial premises, minimising the time you’re without heating is treated as seriously as the installation itself.

Regularly. Schools, village halls and community buildings often have a committee, trust, or facilities manager involved rather than a single decision-maker, and we’re used to working through that process rather than expecting a single point of contact.

It depends on land availability, not the building’s use. A pub or school with enough garden or grounds can suit ground source as well as a large house can. Where land’s limited, air source is usually the more practical route.

Ongoing Care

Already have a system installed? We can take on the servicing.

Downtime costs a business more than it costs a household. If your heating or air conditioning is due a service, underperforming, or needs a repair, our service team can take it on, whoever fitted it originally.

Servicing

Annual servicing to keep warranties valid and the system running at the efficiency it was designed for.

Diagnostics

Something not performing as it should? We’ll identify what’s actually wrong before recommending any work.

Repair

Parts and labour repairs, including systems installed by other companies.

We maintain most major brands, including;
Ecoforest · Mitsubishi · Vaillant · Viessmann · Daikin · Samsung · Clivet · IDM

The First Step

Tell us what the building actually is.

A barn, a church, a mansion mid-conversion, or something that doesn’t fit neatly into any category, all worth a proper conversation before anything’s assumed about what’s possible.
