Air source has become the mass-market recommendation, and there’s a reasonable case for that: the outdoor unit is compact, installation is quicker than ground source, and the capital cost is the lowest of any renewable heat source. None of that’s in dispute.
What varies enormously between installers is the work done before the unit goes on the wall. A proper install starts with an accurate heat loss calculation for the specific property, not a rule-of-thumb sized against floor area, and factors in what the existing radiators or underfloor heating can actually deliver at a low flow temperature. Skip that step, which a fast-turnaround, high-volume installer often does, and the result is a heat pump that’s technically fitted but never runs at the efficiency it was specified to hit.

Modern units are considerably quieter than the reputation suggests, typically comparable to a fridge running outdoors, but placement still matters. We factor in distance from bedroom windows and neighbouring boundaries at survey stage rather than fitting the unit wherever’s most convenient for the pipework.

It depends on your electricity tariff and the unit’s SCOP, but a correctly sized system on a reasonable tariff is usually competitive with gas, and often cheaper once you factor in a smart tariff or solar generation.
